Eligibility

Turning 65, disability, ESRD, still working with employer coverage, HSA conflicts — who qualifies for Medicare, when, and when it is safe to wait.

Most people become eligible at 65, but eligibility is not the same as needing to enroll. If you or a spouse still work for a larger employer, you may be able to delay Part B without penalty; if you contribute to an HSA, enrolling in Part A changes what you can put in. Disability and certain conditions open Medicare earlier.

The rules for delaying are specific about employer size, coverage type and paperwork, and getting one detail wrong turns a sensible delay into a penalty. The guides below walk each situation through, and the timeline tool checks yours.
